Statistics relating to scientists and engineers born in Utah and other states

My study uses the 1993 statistics on college graduates. To generate the data report from which I derived the statistical metrics on scientists born in Utah, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://sestat.nsf.gov
  2. Click on “Data Access
  3. Click on “create your own tables
  4. Register and log in [Registration is free, but does require an email address.]
  5. At the bottom of the page click on “Methodology” to understand how the data base was collected, and its statistical reliability.
  6. For “Database” select “College Grads Survey, NSCG.” (1993). Then click “Continue.”
  7. Click on “Variables.”
  8. In the box labeled “Available Variables,” scroll down the list and click on (highlight) “O_ED_HD_MAJOR_ED_GRP_MINOR.” In the box labeled “Short Description for highlighted variables,” note the description “Field of Major for Highest Degree (35 Minor Groups).”
  9. Click on the “Add” button next to Col 1. Verify that “O_ED_HD_MAJOR_ED_GRP_MINOR” now appears in the adjacent box.
  10. In the box labeled “Available Variables,” scroll down the list and click on (highlight) “U_DEM_BIRTH_PLACE_ST_CNTRY_CD.” In the box labeled “Short Description for highlighted variables,” note the description “State/County Code, Place of Birth.”
  11. Click on the “Add” button next to Row. Verify that “U_DEM_BIRTH_PLACE_ST_CNTRY_CD” now appears in the adjacent box.
  12. From the selections at the top of the screen, click on “Table Generation.”
  13. At the bottom of the screen, click on “Generate Result Table.”

I generated my result table 17:30 Friday, September 7, 2001. The table consists of a column along the left-hand side of the page with birthplaces (all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, plus countries throughout the world). Along the top of the table are various academic disciplines (both science and non-science). The body of the table shows the weighted number of individuals in the United States whose last (typically highest) college degree and birthplace are given by the table coordinates. Figure A1 illustrates how a part of my result table looked when I printed it.

Figure A1. Portion of the result table I generated using SESTAT.

Following in the rest of this appendix are sifted data from the SESTAT result table first with the data unranked and un-normalized, and then with the data ranked and normalized for each scientific/engineering discipline. The data in the sifted tables are weighted, and the data in the normalized tables have been normalized to US census population figures for 2000.

Sifted data from NSF results table for number of scientists and engineers, with various disciplines, born in various states.
