Secret Ceremonies : A Mormon Woman’s Intimate Diary of Marriage and Beyond book review
Deborah Laake – Secret Ceremonies : A Mormon Woman’s Intimate Diary of Marriage and Beyond
Although this book is virtually nothing like the others on this site (as it deals mostly with personal feelings rather than any sort of objective history), I thought I’d throw it in anyway as it is an interesting read. The author was excommunicated in 1994 for writing it even though she hadn’t been active in the church for years (just like me).
I think any Mormon who grew up in the church (especially females) can relate in some way to her story. Most of us haven’t ended up in mental institutions, due in part, because of the pressures the church and our LDS families place on us, but it isn’t too difficult to see how that could possibly happen. The author is very humorous and a very good writer. Non-members, as well as former or current LDS members, should find this book to be a very interesting autobiography.
